William H. Newbery, 84, passed away peacefully September 25, 2009. He was born to Robert and Gretchen Newbery in California. He served faithfully for our country in the US Army and received honorable discharge, under which he was a demolition expert, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a good outstanding long time resident of Sierra Madre and was active in the community. Bill was a volunteer Fireman with Sierra Madre, Boy Scout Leader, Volunteer at Riverside National Cemetery as Armorer and member of the Honor Guard, a member of the VFW post 3208, 75th Division Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans, and member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, he was owner and part owner for many years of Bill’s Bicycle Center in Sierra Madre, California. Bill is survived by his brothers, Robert W. Newbery Jr. of Kirkland, Washington and Bruce P. Newbery of Costa Mesa, California, two nephews; Richard Newbery and Kenneth Newbery, and one niece, Debra Johnson. Services will be held at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Sierra Madre Friday October 9, 2009. Rosary at 9:30am and Memorial Mass at 10:00am. Interment to follow at Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery.
