Virginia B. Alderfer

May 19, 1919 — February 25, 2012

Virginia Bert Alderfer, long time Upland resident, died peacefully in Meridian, Idaho, on February 25, 2012. Born in Abilene, Kansas, May 19, 1919, Virginia moved to Southern California as a youth with her family. After graduating from Beulah High School, Virginia received an AA degree from Chaffey College. She married her beloved husband of 59 years, Dr. A. James Alderfer on August 14, 1941. They moved to the Upland/Ontario area in 1946 where James established a medical practice. Virginia worked as his secretary and assistant for a brief time before becoming a full-time homemaker, tending to their three children. She was active in several women’s groups at the Upland Brethren in Christ Church, the Republican Women’s Organization, the ladies’ auxiliary of San Antonio Community Hospital, and the Upland women’s club. She was an accomplished seamstress, excellent painter of china, and a wonderful cook. Her devoted and loving care for her husband and children took precedence in her life. She is survived by two children, Jean Findley and Ray Alderfer of Redmond, WA, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her husband, and a dear daughter, Betty Rose, in 2010. Her love of her Lord and a desire for excellence was evident in all she did. A memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, will be at the chapel at the Upland Brethren in Christ Church. Memorial gifts may be given in her name to Southern California Youth for Christ, P. O. Box 7125, Long Beach, CA 90807. Care entrusted to the Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home in Monrovia (626-385-3244).
