Sophia Dagres Palomares

Sophia Dagres Palomares, daughter of Fani & James Dagres and sister of Catherine Dagres Ray, died peacefully in her home, surrounded by family & friends that she loved. She was 10 days short of her 87th birthday, and lived life to the fullest. A perfect day for her would be basking in the glorious rays of the sun. Born in Los Angeles, she was theff 1st generation of Greek immigrants who immigrated through Ellis Island in the early 1900's. Sophia survived the passing of her son, Chico, and nephew, Conrad, who she considered to be a 2nd son. Sophia was a professional opera singer and met her husband, Jose Antonio Palomares, a professional opera singer as well, in 1948 at the Los Angeles Operatic Lab while rehearsing for Othello. Sophia lived her entire life for her faith, family, and friends. She was a proud Greek-American and visited Karia, the Greek Village where her father was born and raised, many times. Nothing made Sophia prouder than her granddaughters, Stephanie and Emily Chassman and Conrad’s son, Robert McMahill. She was their “Yaya.” She is also survived by her daughter Tonifaye Palomares- Chassman, Son-in-Law, Mark Chassman, and niece, Francia McMahill. Funeral services will be Friday, Dec 23rd @ 11:00 a.m., Saint Sophia Cathedral, 1324 So. Normandie Ave, L.A. 90006 In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sophia can be made to Saint Sophia Cathedral.
