On March 29, 1953, Samuel Spicer was born to the union of Enoch Spicer Sr. and Thelma Spicer-Adams in Los Angeles, California. The Spicer family joined Second Baptist Church after moving to Monrovia in 1947 where Mother Thelma has been a faithful member for over 60 years, at the same church, Samuel accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized at an early age. He was an active member in his youth. Affectionately known as “Sammy”, he attended Huntington Elementary, Clifton Jr. High and Monrovia High School. He graduated from Monrovia Beauty College and became a licensed Cosmetologist. He followed his Mother Thelma’s footsteps, which is a 55-year veteran hairstylist and still working in her salon where she and Sammy spent much time together. During the early years of her career, Sammy worked in the salon along side his mother. When they were not working, they would find time to travel and have fun together. He also worked as a Cosmetologist at Bryant Mortuary in San Francisco for the Kelley family for several years. He had a love for flowers and plants and with his green thumbs worked in a floral shop for many years where he created many beautiful arrangements. Sammy was the life of the party ! He loved to dance, sing, cook and clean. No matter where he was, food, fun and laughter was always present. Sammy was family oriented and very protective of his relatives and no matter what day it was, he created a holiday atmosphere to eat, drink and be merry with him. “Uncle Sammy “ especially loved keeping company with his nieces and nephews, willing to babysit, cook for them and even gave them money whenever he had it. He entertained them and disciplined them with words of wisdom along with a dose of humor. Sammy met no strangers! He was not only a people person; he was a man of many talents. He loved to travel and along his journeys, he met people who truly found pleasure in his unique and transparent character. He was indeed a very special and one of a kind individual who danced to the beat of his own drum. Many of us have a host of “Sammy Stories” and fond memories to keep us laughing for a lifetime. His ability to light up a room, clean a house and warm our hearts was a blessing to all our lives. Everyone loved Sammy and many fond memories will forever be etched in our hearts. In his latter years, Sam’s health began to fail. He battled with numerous health issues that caused him to spend many of his final days hospitalized fighting for his life. In spite of the countless near death experiences, he was a fighter, strong in battle; we called him the “Come Back Kid”. We praise God for His mercy and grace on his life to protect and keep him alive years beyond his life expectancy due to the overall illness and his life choices. Sammy had a strong willed, independant spirit and a rebel with a zeal for life, lived to the fullest !
