Ruth Julia Thompson

Thompson, Ruth Julia, age 92, passed away December 24, 2011. Ruthie was born on May 13, 1918 in Hendricks, Minnesota, her family moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota shortly thereafter, where her grandfather worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad. At age 1-1/2, Ruthie and the Thompsons moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota; at age 8 they came to California, and in 1941 the family moved permanently to Sierra Madre, CA. By age 25, Ruthie had graduated from UCLA with a major in art and a minor in history. From 1941 thru 1945, she attended Otis Art Institute and received her degree in commercial art. Ruthie worked at Barker Brothers in Los Angeles, in the advertising and design department from 1949 until they closed in 1971. She then spent a few years working for Sears as an Illustrator for the advertising and design departments, and from 1974 thru 1986 she was a freelance artist for Hinshaws Department Store and The Hub Newspaper both Arcadia businesses. Ruthie leaves behind caring neighbors and friends, along with her adopted family, Linda Scott, Terri Dorrington and Jeanne Keating; her dear friend and companion, Josephina Molina; three generations of the Buchan Family, and loving neighbor and friend, Carolann Recabaren. Viewing/Visitation time beginning at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 6 and a service at 12 Noon will both be held at the Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance FH in Monrovia (626-358-3244).
