Robert S. Bullock

Robert (Bob) Sherman Bullock, a college professor of art studies for more than 40 years, passed away on February 14, 2011, at the age of 79. Born in Indianapolis, Bob moved to Pasadena in the 1940’s to join his father, Felix Bullock and mother, Lena, in a move that would bring the family to Pasadena College, a Nazarene faith campus. Bob was a talented musician and artist, and received a scholarship to attend Chouinard Art Institute in downtown Los Angeles. He later received his master’s degree in art from CSU Los Angeles. He served as an air controller with the U.S. Air force, and his early career included work at Aerojet as an industrial designer and illustrator. Bob melded his passion for art with teaching and taught at Pasadena College, Citrus College, and Azusa Pacific University where he founded the art department and was chair for almost 20 years. The direction of his work shifted from teaching drawing and painting to ceramics and computer art, and he continued teaching ceramic students for many years after retiring from Citrus College with 34 years of service. Bob was kind, quiet, highly talented in art and enjoyed passing on the knowledge and skill he had so that others could also blossom in their love for art. He was loved by many and will be missed. He is survived by his wife, Esther Bullock, daughters Lisa Lira and Karen Piereson, his son Steve Bullock, and sisters Ruth Bullock and Reatha Skiles. Memorial services will be held at Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene on March 5, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Assisting the family, Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home in Monrovia (626-358-3244).
