Rachel Evans was a southern belle raised in Laurel, Mississippi. She was born to William and Ollie Mae Sumrall on December 19, 1920. Rachel was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John Evans. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Royes; her three children, Joann Steinmeier, Susan Pease and Thomas Evans; three grandchildren, Jeremy Steinmeier, Sheryl Baird and Lori Stevens, and four great grandchildren. During WWII she met and married an Army Air Corps fighter pilot, Lt. John T. Evans. For most of her life she was a homemaker and devoted mother. She worked for nearly twenty years as a secretary for the manager of the San Gabriel Country Club. After her retirement, she and John delivered “Meals on Wheels” for the Arcadia Red Cross for nearly 10 years. She was a member of the Los Voluntarios at the LA County Arboretum where she grew African Violets for sale at the gift shop. She was an accomplished cook, a gracious hostess, and loved reading and knitting. Rachel passed away peacefully in her home on January 2, 2012. Her memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 13 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Arcadia. Contribution in her name may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
