PHYLLIS JENKINS
Phyllis Marie Steffen Jenkins was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on October 27, 1925, as the only child of Robert and Margaret Steffen. At over 98 years of age, she passed away peacefully, with her family nearby, on June 13, 2024. She moved from the Cincinnati, Ohio area to Southern California after World War II, where she met and soon married Jim Jenkins in 1948. Jim and Phyllis moved to Pasadena in 1951. They were some of the original owners in Upper Hastings Ranch, where they resided for nearly the rest of their lives. They raised their three sons there (Scott, Dean and Neal). They have seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. For the last six years, Phyllis lived at The Kensington Sierra Madre. When the youngest of her sons started elementary school, Phyllis began attending PCC at night and later Cal State LA. She earned her teaching credential and a Master’s Degree in Education. For over 20 years beginning in 1970, she taught government and civics at Pasadena High School. Phyllis especially enjoyed team-teaching with her good friend Edmund Sutro. She encouraged her students (and sons) to become knowledgeable about and active in civic and community activities. Phyllis was named Teacher of the Year on several occasions. She was an active member of the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church, and her local P.E.O Chapter. Jim predeceased Phyllis in 2008. A memorial reception will be held at The Kensington Sierra Madre on June 30, 2024, at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Pasadena Educational Foundation.
