Miriam Bernice Coey Grant 1912-2010 Miriam Bernice Coey Grant, age 98, passed away July 13, 2010, of natural causes at Royal Oaks Manor in Duarte, California. Miriam was born on February 9, 1912 in Alameda, California. She was one of seven children born to Harvey Stafford Coey and Lydia Cornelia Stone Coey. Her five children, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a multitude of nieces and nephews survive Miriam. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Robert Roy “Bob” Grant; six siblings, Mabel Lilly Sholin, Seymour Stafford Coey, Clarence Vernon Coey, Ruth Amilia Farr, Lois Estella Ewell, Lydia Cornelia Oie Hammer, and her granddaughter, Kimberly Lynne Grant. Miriam spent most of her growing-up years in Modesto, California. She moved to Pasadena, California in the fall of 1928 to attend Pasadena Academy her junior and senior years of high school. She graduated from Pasadena Academy in the spring of 1930. In the fall she entered Pasadena (Nazarene) College and graduated with a BA on May 29, 1934. She majored in English and minored in Sociology. It was at Pasadena College that Miriam met her future husband, Bob Grant. They were married on August 22, 1940. Together they raised five children: Marvella Jean Mangum (Thomas), Robert Roy Grant, Jr. (Kathie), Thomas Glenn Grant and Audrey Jean Grant. From September 1934 until June 1936 Laird Hall Elementary Boarding School employed Miriam as a teacher and matron of the girl’s dormitory. From September 1936 until June 1937, she was an Instructor of Physical Education at Pasadena College. Between 1937 and 1939, she furthered her education by taking social work classes at USC. In 1953, Miriam began her teaching career with the Los Angeles Unified School District. She taught in various elementary schools in the San Fernando Valley. She also taught summer school for the Kamehameha schools in Hawaii in 1965, 1966 and 1967. Throughout her years of teaching Miriam continued taking education classes and was awarded a Lifetime Teaching Credential on November 26, 1963, which entitled her to teach in any elementary school in California. She was a member of the local and the national Christian Educators Association. Miriam retired on June 17, 1977. After Miriam and Bob retired they purchased a travel trailer and traveled throughout the United States visiting family and friends. Miriam was devoted to her family and to her church. She attended First Church of the Nazarene in Los Angeles from 1947, until she moved to Royal Oaks Manor in Duarte, California in 1992. She then attended Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene. She faithfully supported her church with her presence and financially. Miriam came from a great heritage of believers in Jesus as the Christ, the only begotten Son of God. She is now in heaven with Jesus, whom she loved and served. Miriam’s children thank the staff at Royal Oaks Manor for the kind care they gave Miriam while she resided at that facility. Memorial Services at the First Church of the Nazarene in Pasadena will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 17. Private graveside services were held at the Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newall.
