Matthew Lockwood

May 19, 1963 — May 26, 2023

“Everybody loves Matt,” was a phrase spoken often by those around him. Known for his warmth, wit, and humor, Matt was a true friend to those he’d known for decades, and those he’d just met.

Born on May 19, 1963, he passed away May 26, 2023. Matt was preceded in death by his father, Tom Lockwood, his grandparents Tom and Pauline Jordan, and his uncle Richard Horn. He is survived by his deeply beloved partner Stacey Moreland, his mother Janet Lockwood, and his brother Eric (Cindy) Lockwood. He is also survived by his nephew Alex Lockwood and niece Audrey (Colin Norton) Lockwood, aunts Anne Horn and Linda (David) Luginbill, and uncle Gary Fedewa, as well as seven cousins and many, many dear friends. He attended Western Michigan University and served in the U.S. Army. He worked for Pacific Packaging (Pack West) for 30 years. If you ever asked him about his work, you’d learn there is much more than you can imagine to putting a lid on a jar!

Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was an unrelenting fan of the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Red Wings, despite how difficult that could be most years. Matt had an abiding love of the open sea, having worked on the crew of several racing yachts. That love was also seen in his model-building, one of his many passions.

Any friend of Matt knew of his remarkable intellect. He was an incredible Jeopardy player, and he could tear through crossword puzzles with dazzling speed. His keen mind was ever a part of his wit and conversation, and if you spoke with him long enough, you came away smarter for it.. A collector of first editions, he was a voracious reader, enjoying Stephen King, the science fiction of Larry Niven, the thrillers of Nelson DeMille, and many other authors. He had absolutely no use for Donald Trump.

While his death is an immense loss, he leaves behind countless good memories and love in the minds and hearts of friends and family. He will be missed.

Rest well, my brother.
