Tumilty, Mary Dyer, a 58 year resident of Sierra Madre, CA, passed away July 28, 2010 at the age of 95, after a short hospitalization. Mary was born September 29, 1914 in Terre Haute, Indiana. She moved with her family to Hollywood, CA in 1922. She attended Fairfax High School and graduated in 1936 from USC, where she was president of her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. She had two husbands, James Robert Matthews and Bernard Tumilty, who both predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Matthews Villani and Edmond Dennis Villani, and her granddaughter, Adrienne Alice Villani. Mary was always active in Sierra Madre life: the Republican Party, the Friends of the Sierra Madre Public Library, the Howard Whalen Memorial Sculpture Garden, the Creative Arts Group, and the Gamble House in Pasadena. Mary was City Librarian for Sierra Madre from 1975 until her retirement in 1984. She was honored as the Citizen of the Year in 1982 in Sierra Madre for her extensive service to her community. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at the Church of the Ascension, 25 East Laurel Avenue, Sierra Madre, CA 91024 on what would have been her 96th birthday, September 29, 2010 at 11am.
