Mary Phinos was born December 12, 1920 in California to immigrant Greek parents, Vasiliki and James Phinos, joining brothers George, John and Andy. In 1941, she married Dr. Nicholas T. Chester, D.D.S. Son, Tom Chester and daughter, Kathy Chester joined the family in the mid 1940s. Mary and Dr. Chester were extremely proud of being founding members of the first Greek Orthodox church in Los Angeles, as well as being an integral part of the building and forming of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles. She lovingly cared for her in-laws, mother and husband until they passed. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a devoted friend. Perhaps her greatest qualities were her lifelong unselfish servitude to family and friends and her perseverance and ability to overcome life’s obstacles. She is survived by her two children, Tom Chester and Kathy Ferres, grandchildren, Sandia, Michele, Carrie, Nick and Mike, and great grandchildren, Carsten, Mia, Penelope, Mack, Kai, Ruby, Lily and Eva. Her service will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral 1324 S. Normandie Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90006. Interment to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes. Care entrusted to Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home, Monrovia (626) 358-3244.
