Marina Isabel Flores Villibord de Almendarez lived to 91, passing away after a summer thunderstorm rained down on Los Angeles. An indomitable, complex, sweet, and cheeky woman, Marina was born in Honduras, where she lived a beautiful childhood on the island of Roatán and lived a storied life in La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula before she moved to the U.S. in the 1960s with 5 children and her husband.
Her stories of her life, her experiences and beliefs, her sorrows and joys and difficulties filled and shaped her family. Her life and her love stretched across continents and oceans.
She loved mangoes and avocados, watching novelas — the ones where priests fathered illegitimate children, listening to Tom Jones and Agustin Lara, swooning over Gavin Newsom, cooking incredible food and desserts, hearing about the accomplishments of her grandchildren, counting numbers in her head that others couldn’t, telling gossip and stories of her life with pure relish, and praying at all hours into the night.
We as her family were privileged to know her. We tell her stories because they have shaped us into who we are today. Descansa en Paz.
