Marie A. Schmitt

Marie Anna (Kioebge) Schmitt, M.D., a resident of Arcadia for over 59 years, passed away November 17, 2012 at the age of 93. Marie is survived by her children, William J. Schmitt and his wife Lori, Frederic “Fritz” P. Schmitt and his wife Bernie, and Anne M. Schmitt; her grandchildren, Megan, Kaitlyn, Edward, Frederic Jr., Samantha, Emily, Jordan, Parker, numerous nieces and nephews, and her sister Anita Davis. Marie graduated in 1950 from the Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago, interned and was a resident in Pediatric Medicine at Los Angeles County Hospital until 1953, when she moved to Arcadia, becoming Chief Resident, Contagious Diseases at the newly constructed Methodist Hospital. She entered private practice as the first female physician in Arcadia in 1955, and also worked part time for the L.A. Co. Health Department Well Baby Clinic, Baldwin Park Child Development Clinic - Cerebral Palsy Center, and Arcadia Unified School District. In private she dedicated her life to her husband Bill, her children and grandchildren. She served her community on the Sister City Commission, received national recognition by Catholic Charities, enjoyed membership in Altrusa, and was a friend of the Carmelite Sisters. Vigil will be held at 7 PM Friday Nov 30, and a Funeral Mass celebrated Saturday, December 1 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 10:00 AM, interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marie's name to: Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart, 819 Buena Vista St., Duarte, CA 91010. Care entrusted to Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance in Monrovia.
