On June 2, 2011 Marie DeGrazia-Goodey, passed away at the beautiful age of 96 at home and in the comfort of her loving family. She was born on March 1, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois to Rocco and Mary DeGrazia. She was the oldest of 3 daughters and lived to tell a tale of the Great Depression, working for $.10 an hour - and glad to get it! She married the love of her life, Walter, in 1943 and was married for 43 years until his death in 1986. She traveled extensively with her husband and daughters, and enjoyed playing the penny slot machines in Las Vegas. She loved life, loved to laugh and tell stories of times past. But her passion was her family and how proud she was of every one of them. She lived to see marriages, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and so enjoyed just being together as a family. She was loving, nurturing, encouraging, supportive, and best of all a great listener! She was everything a Mom should be – but more. She was strong and determined and taught her children the important values that they carry on today. She was the glue that kept the family together and because of her, we will never be the same – only better. She is survived by Walter, Mary Beth, Michael, Carolyn, Elouise, and Bob as well as 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Rosary and Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. on June 9 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Monrovia, located at 740 S. Shamrock Avenue. A special thanks of appreciation and gratitude to Buena Vista Care Hospice in Westlake Village for their extraordinary care and support. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Society, Foothill Unity Center in Monrovia, or your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Douglass and Zook Mortuary in Monrovia. These Irish eyes are smiling. They've seen more than 35,000 sunrises. They've seen more than 35,000 sunsets. How many others haven't?They cried over the sadness of the great depression, but laughed their way to the other side. How many couldn't? They've marveled at the beauty of the Sierra Madre, living in their shadow. How many would have liked? They set upon a wonderful man, to share my life, bringing four beautiful children. How many envied us? They've set upon beautiful grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and how special is that? They've seen faithful friends, too many to count, who've so beautifully touched my life, and whose lives I’ve hopefully touched. How many can say that? They've set upon the silver, gold, ceramic and wood of artisans and craftsmen, warmed by their skill. How many others never had the chance? They once saw the awed crowds of the famed Rose Parade, from the front of a float, who'd have not traded places? They've seen so much that was good; so much that was beautiful, for such a long time. How many didn't? So, “Goodbye for the Present.” As all must, mine must close for a time, but wipe the tears from yours, because These Irish Eyes will be smiling on you, again, one day.
