Major Mcdonald "Don" Mcintosh

July 23, 1922 — December 2, 2015

Major McDonald "Don" McIntosh passed away at the age of 93 on December 2, 2015 with his devoted wife Marjorie and daughter Bonnie by his side. Don was born in San Pedro, CA the youngest of 3 sons to Major and May (Bedford) McIntosh. While a young boy, he was involved in a serious traffic accident and spent months recuperating. During his recuperation, he began to draw to pass the time away and discovered his artistic talent. Working with his father on the railroad, he learned Morse code. After graduating from Coachella Valley High School in Thermal, CA, he enlisted in the Navy and served during WWII; his knowledge of Morse code was appreciated and he became a sonar man. He was stationed in the Aleutians, Guam, and other areas within the Pacific. When stationed in Washington State, he was in charge of a work team responsible for laying metal nets across Puget Sound in order to trap possible infiltration of enemy submarines. Upon his discharge he returned to a career as a meat cutter, which he had started at the age of 14. He met his wife of 68 years, Marjorie Ridpath, on a blind date and it was love at first site. They married, had a daughter Bonnie, bought a new house in Arcadia, and had another daughter, Beverly. Don continued his work as a meat cutter, including teaching Marjorie how to wrap meat and occasionally they, at different times in their careers, worked side-by-side. They retired in 1990 and Don enjoyed drawing with pastels, painting with oils and eventually mastered stained glass. The couple enjoyed traveling and visited Mexico, Europe, Australia and Canada. However their greatest joy in traveling was via train and they crisscrossed the country many times. Don is survived by his wife Marjorie, daughters Bonnie McIntosh of Bremerton, WA, Beverly (Ben) Petty of Capistrano Beach, his beloved niece Vivian Lewis of San Clemente along with numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and granddogs. Funeral services are Monday, December 14th at Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance in Monrovia, followed by interment at the National Cemetery in Riverside.
