Lucille Stirling

November 8, 1911 — May 29, 2012

Lucille Stewart Stirling was born in Alamo, Nevada on November 8th, 1911. She was the second child and first daughter of Raymond and Ruth (Paris) Stewart. The family would eventually total 10 children, 6 girls and 4 boys. She is survived by 3 sisters, Pearl Tolman, Lillian Ammerman and Dorothy Bunker. Alamo, NV. is a small town about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV. It was settled by pioneer families that were sent from Kanab, UT by President Brigham Young. There was water there and fertile ground for growing crops. When Lucille was 17 she and her sister, Florence, who was only 13 months younger, traveled to Las Vegas to attend High School. They helped support themselves by ironing, cleaning and waiting tables. It was tough to be alone at such a young age. They graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1930. Lucille went to work as a telephone operator in Las Vegas. There were only about 94 phone lines at that time. She knew all the numbers by heart and worked at the old fashioned switch board, throwing plugs to connect the calls. She met and married Earl Oxtoby on November 8, 1935. He was an accountant for the U. S. Government while Hoover Dam was being built. Lou Jean, her only child, was born November 6, 1938. During the Second World War she went to Williamsburg, VA to be near her husband while he was in the Navy training as a Sea Bee. Eventually she met and married Thomas G. Stirling. They moved to Tucson, AZ and then in 1949 came to Monrovia, CA. They purchased a home in Duarte, CA and lived there until Tom’s death in 1974. She worked for California Water and Telephone which became General Telephone and finally Verizon, and retired in 1973. In 1975 she came to live with her daughter and son-in law in Glendora. She has resided there every since. She enjoyed many happy years of traveling and doing things with Andy and Lou Jean Barnes. After Andy’s death in 2003 she kept Lou Jean company, helping her at home while she worked as the Broker/Owner of CENTURY 21 Adams & Barnes. Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Second Ward: 2121 E. Rte 66, Glendora, CA on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Oakdale Memorial Park, 1401 South Grand Ave, Glendora, CA. In lieu of flowers a gift to Citrus Valley Hospice will be greatly appreciated, their address is 820 N. Phillips Ave. West Covina, CA (626) 859-2263.
