Lloyd Robert Johnson

May 18, 1919 — October 1, 2009

Lloyd passed away on October 1, 2009 at the age of 90. Although his passing was unexpected and sudden, it was calm and peaceful at the same time. His family is comforted to know he did not suffer or linger in a terminal state for days or weeks. He is rejoicing in heaven with so many loved ones that have gone before him. Born in Rainier, Oregon on the banks of the mighty Columbia River on May 18, 1919, Lloyd was the fourth child born to Fredrika Carlson Johnson and Adolf Johnson. He met and married his wife, Gladys Irene (Pearson) in Portland, Oregon. He and Gladys recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on September 11th. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Gladys; daughter Karen (Coke), grandchildren Kary and Kristin and great-grandchild Gregory; son, Ron; and daughter Tami (Romani) and her husband, Jim, grandchildren Nikki, Chris and Brandie. Lloyd graduated from L.I.F.E. Bible College in 1942 and was ordained to the ministry in the Church of the Foursquare Gospel. Reverend Johnson and his wife co-pastored many churches in the western states, most recently Victory Chapel in Arcadia where they served for 21 years prior to retirement in 1988. Known by his beloved church family as “Brother Johnson” and “The Silver Fox,” Lloyd’s enthusiastic way of leading the church in singing is fondly remembered. During World War II, Lloyd did what he could to serve his country by working at Lockheed on production of P-51 Mustang fighter airplanes. In the 1950’s Lloyd traveled to Korea with World Vision founder Bob Pierce to help assess the Korean War damage and work with the government to bring orphaned children to the United States for adoption. He also traveled to many churches in the U.S. showing films for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. In his retirement years, Lloyd enjoyed working as a transport driver for a motor home manufacturer, driving beautiful new motor homes to their sales destinations. This job took him as far as Florida and Washington states, and his family began calling him the “Professional Driver.” He was always very proud of his perfect driving record until the day he finally decided to give up his driver’s license at 90 years of age. Although Lloyd didn’t golf as much as he would have liked in his twilight years, he did manage to score a 95 yard hole-in-one at age 83 at the 5th hole of Arcadia Par 3 Golf Course! Lloyd was a caring, compassionate, fun-loving gentle man who always put others’ needs before his own. He will be deeply missed by his family and the many who called him a friend. We welcome you to come celebrate his life: Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Victory Chapel, 805 N. First Avenue, Arcadia, CA 91006 (626) 447-8471. Reception to follow in Johnson Hall. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 9, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Live Oak Memorial Park, 200 E. Duarte Road, Monrovia, CA 91016. Care entrusted to Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home in Monrovia.
