Lee Callander, a dedicated professional and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, in California after a courageous four-year battle with ovarian cancer. Born in New York, Lee's journey was marked by her passion for history, culture, and family, which she nurtured throughout her life and career.

Lee earned her bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Hofstra University, a foundation that propelled her into a meaningful career focused on preserving and celebrating Native American heritage. She served with distinction as a Registrar for the Museum of the American Indian and lent her expertise as a Collections Management Consultant for the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. Additionally, Lee was a trusted Consultant for the Museum of the American Indian, contributing her knowledge and dedication to these important cultural institutions. She also co-authored a book called Shawnee Home Life Paintings of Earnest Spybuck (1984).

Lee married Duane King in 1991, with whom she had two children, Travis (born in 1992) and Angela (born in 1996). After the family moved to California, she became deeply invested in her new community. She worked as a community outreach assistant for the Arcadia Unified School District, where she helped foster connections and support for families and students alike. Her leadership shone brightly in her active involvement with the Parent Teacher Association, serving multiple terms as President, demonstrating her commitment to education and parental engagement. Lee also served as a founding member on the Board of Directors and as Regional Group Coordinator for Families with Children From China- Los Angeles, where her creativity and deep commitment were vital in supporting hundreds of families through the process of international adoption and in organizing events to celebrate their childrens’ heritage.

Lee’s life was rich with varied interests and talents. She enjoyed making pottery in her she shed, cooking family dinners, baking sweet treats, sewing Halloween costumes and quilts, stamping handmade Christmas and birthday cards, gardening, watercolor painting, genealogy, and had a special fondness for LEGO and octopuses. Among her many joys was spending cherished time with family, particularly during the holidays, where she delighted in preparing elaborate and delicious meals and thoughtful gifts to share with loved ones.

She is survived by her children, Travis King (Antonella Ilarini Cimadomo) and Angela King, her brother, Jeff Callander, and her nephew and nieces: Steve (Laurean) Callander, Nichole Fiutko, and Ashley Stump and her beloved Scottie, Darcy. She is also survived by her second family, Rachel and Kyle Levin. Lee was preceded in death by her father, Robert Callander, her mother, June Carlsen, and her husband, Duane King (married 26 years).

Lee Callander’s grace, warmth, and dedication to family, community, and cultural heritage leave an enduring legacy. She will be remembered with deep respect and affection by all who knew her.
