Katherine Inouye

Katherine “Mieke” Inouye, 72, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the home of her son Benjamin in Monrovia, California, surrounded by her family.

Born on July 29, 1953, in Topeka, Kansas, she was the eldest of four children of Joseph Leo Bickett and Maria Suzanna Wristers Bickett. Her father’s career as a pilot for Trans World Airlines opened the world to Mieke at a young age, inspiring a lifelong sense of curiosity, independence, and adventure.

Mieke bravely battled Central Nervous System Lymphoma for nearly two years, meeting every challenge with courage, grace, and an unwavering spirit. She credited the exceptional and compassionate care of the Oncology team at City of Hope in Duarte, California for the precious time she was able to share with her loved ones.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Gordon Inouye, who remained her steadfast partner and advocate throughout her illness. She is also survived by her sons Benjamin Inouye (Kimberly) and Aaron Inouye (Larae); her four beloved grandchildren Lilliana, Akira, Isaiah, and Isla; and her siblings Erick Bickett (Holly), Jill Cordsen (Barry), and Liesbet Bickett (Hans). She leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grand‑nieces, grand‑nephews, and many aunts and uncles.

Mieke’s American Bickett lineage traces back prior to the Revolutionary War, making her eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, a heritage she cherished.

More than 30 years ago, Mieke and Gordon fell in love with Border Collies, a passion that grew into a lifelong calling. Recognizing the limited gene pool in Hawaii due to the state’s rabies‑free status, Mieke forged trusted relationships with breeders in England and Australia and imported breeding pairs to strengthen the line. Through her dedication, Camelot Farms became one of Hawaii’s most respected sources of exceptional Border Collies. Her meticulous screening of prospective owners ensured her puppies thrived, with many earning top honors in agility and obedience. Today, countless Border Collies across Hawaii trace their lineage back to Mieke’s vision and devotion.

Private services for the immediate family will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Douglass & Zook Funeral Home in Monrovia, California. A Celebration of Life is tentatively planned for June 18, 2026, in Hilo, Hawaii, with further details to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mieke’s honor to Aloha ‘Ilio Rescue on the Big Island of Hawaii.
