Juan Lamas, 78, born on August 04, 1947, in Lima, Peru, passed away November 15, 2025 peacefully at home in the presence of his wife, Judy Lamas, son, Steve Huckins, sister, Maria Labarrie and his loving daughter. He had been battling cancer for three years and the last 3 weeks of his precious life he was home and able to see all his family and friends with a smile and grace. He laughed and ate whatever he wanted especially a popsicle whenever he wanted one.
He was born in Lima, Peru and attended military school where he tutored fellow students in math. In 1971, he came to live and work in Pasadena as a clerk for 39 years for the US Postal service and also was the President of the clerks Union where he fought for employees rights. He later moved to Duarte and in retirement he had a passion for growing anything especially tomatoes and chili's and later cactus which he shared his bounty with neighbors leaving them on their doorsteps.
He loved walking and weekly went to the Arboretum in Arcadia where he visited the Orchid room and walked the Loop at the Pasadena Rose Bowl.
The past year, Juan was being treated at City of Hope in Duarte where the doctors and nurses worked hard to keep him comfortable. They are to be commended for their professionalism.
I am especially thankful to Juan's son, Steve who stayed the three weeks from Florida at our home and helped me tend to his father changing and cleaning him. Helping him get up to walk and kept him occupied. He went to the market and fixed a few things needed around the house. I will be forever thankful. Couldn't do it without his help. His daughter traveled from long distance and also helped with Dad, and also getting things needed for arranging funeral service and reception for her Dad.
I will miss his beautiful smile which was the same one that I fell in love with first time I met him. Until we see each other again, I will only forever love him.
Juan is survived by his wife, Judy Lamas, son, Steve Huckins, loving daughter, grandson, Rhys Huckins, sisters, Maria Labarrie and Antonieta Chavez Rios and many nephews, nieces and grand-nephews and grand-nieces. Also, our cat Mijo.
Donations can be made in his name at the L.A. Arboretum in Arcadia and City of Hope in Duarte. A mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Monrovia. 740 S. Shamrock Avenue Monrovia, CA 91016. A celebration of Juans life will follow immediatly after. To be announced soon.
