John South

March 14, 1916 — August 4, 2010

Mr. John South, born March 14,1916, in Los Angeles, CA, passed away on August 4, 2010. He resided in Glendale at the time of his passing. Arrangements are under the direction of Douglass and Zook Monrovia, CA.

He was a loyal and caring friend to countless numbers of people, and each person who knew him has a special story to share - a story that inevitably ends with a smile - as the many good times are remembered.

Last Thursday, friends traveled from as far away as New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut to pay tribute and give support to their long-time friends.

A train had recently been named in his honor. Last month over a hundred fellow employees and family members gathered and watched as a 100-ton locomotive was run out for the ceremony that saw the recently rebuilt 1950's engine named in his honor. It was a rare and historic event that meant so much to the railroad man, as he climbed on board the engine waving to the gathering.

In his travels, he met many people and when he had the opportunity he would strike up conversations and, in many instances, these casual acquaintances would become his life long friends. Every project he undertook he did well and his enthusiasm encouraged others.

He served as president of the St. Francis de Sales Parents Club and had served as Local Chairman of the United Transportation Union No. 1131.

He leaves his wife of 20 years, Marie, and four children, daughter Cherie and Melanie as well as two sons William and Michael.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours tonight from 7 pm - 9 pm and Friday 2 pm - 4 pm and 7 pm - 9 pm

A Mass will be offered at 10 am on Saturday at St. Francis Church, Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Early this week, he reflected on the special evening of May 16th, overwhelmed by the number of people who turned out. His only request was that "now that the excitement is over, don't forget me."

He will not be forgotten. His short life touched so many who will recall his love and caring ways.
