Janet Shiels Byrne

Janet Shiels Byrne, 91, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Jan was long time resident of both Los Angeles and Orange Counties. She graduated from Pomona College with her BA and Long Beach State College with her Teaching Credential. Jan touched the lives of many children as a 1st grade teacher for the ABC Unified School District. She was honored as a Master Teacher for her ability to excite learning in her students and her skills in mentoring teachers in the school district. Retirement from teaching led not only to journeys around the world with her husband, Don, but also to opportunities to give back to her community through charity and community service work. She was a long-time member and a two term president of Lamplighters, a Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) guild. As a member of the Garden Grove Women’s Club, she was honored as a two time recipient of the Silver Spoon, an award given in recognition of an individual’s commitment to their community. Jan is survived by her daughter, Margaret Ann Outhouse, her son, Donald, her three grandchildren, Michaela, Devin, and Riley, her son-in-law, Michael, and her daughter-in-law, Erin. Her husband, Don, passed away in 1996. Services will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Sierra Madre, California at 1 pm on Monday, August 20.
