In Loving Memory of Jim Sands
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Sands, aged 83, on Sunday, September 14, 2025, in Arcadia, California. Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who made Monrovia his home for more than 55 years.
Born on January 10, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy. From 1959 to 1962, he served aboard the USS Tolovana as a Seaman 1st Division, Boat Coxswain, and Captain’s Gig Coxswain. His time in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of honor and service that shaped the rest of his life.
Following his military service, Jim built a long and fulfilling career with Southern California Edison, where he worked for over 25 years. His strong work ethic, quiet humor, and unwavering dedication to others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Janis; his children, Jim, Kelly, and Kevin; his brother, John; his sister, Margaret; and his cherished grandchildren—Meaghan, Tiffany, Natalie, Emily, Samantha, Allison, Briar, Melissa, Ashley, Aubrey, David and Indiana—as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Who all brought him immense joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: taking daily walks through his neighborhood, greeting every dog and cat along the way, and filling his home with the lively sounds of Polka music. He also had a passion for both British and American motorcycles—especially BSA, Matchless, and Norton—and a love of NASCAR racing.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Martina and James Sands, and his daughter, Laurie Sands. His loving spirit, strength, and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on what would have been Jim’s 84th birthday: Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Monrovia Community Center – Kay Dalton Hall, 119 W. Palm Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016
In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to help with the cost of the memorial service; any remaining funds will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Jim Sands’s life was a testament to hard work, family devotion, and quiet generosity. His memory will live on in the many lives he touched and the love he shared.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
