Howard "Buzz" Alden Spellman Jr., 88, born on September 17, 1927 in Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away October 28, 2015. He resided in Arcadia, California at the time of his passing.
Buzz graduated from Northfield Mount Herman in 1945, and then enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon Honorable Discharge in 1948, he attended the University of Cincinnati where he graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later that year, he moved to California with his wife, Mollie Miller Spellman.
Buzz became an Engineering Geologist and was later appointed to the California State Board of Geology by then Governor George Deukmejian. He also served as President of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG).
Buzz enjoyed a lifelong love of sailing, golf, tennis and the USA. He was an ardent fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and UCLA Bruins. These loves were passed on to his daughters and grandson. Buzz was a constant presence, supporter, fan, mentor and "partner-in-crime" as his grandson grew up.
Buzz is survived by his brother-in-law "Major" Dan Miller of Billings, Montana, his sister-in-law Marlene Benz of Cincinnati, Ohio, his daughters, Trista Spellman of Whittier, California and Shauna Spellman of Long Beach, California, son-in-law, James "Terry" Tuttle of Whittier, California and grandson, Karsten Alden Spellman Tuttle. He was predeceased by his wife, Mollie Miller Spellman, his father, Howard Alden Spellman, Sr., his mother, Pauline Taylor Beckwith and sister, Shirley Spellman of Springfield, Massachusetts.
A visitation will be held Friday, November 20, 2015 between 4:30 and 8:00 pm at Douglass & Zook mortuary. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 10:00 am at Arcadia's Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration to be followed by a reception in the church's Parish Hall. On Monday at 1:30 pm, November 23, 2015 there will be an interment memorial at Riverside National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Arcadia or the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).
Arrangements are under the direction of Douglass & Zook Funeral and Cremation Services, Monrovia, California.
