Harry C. Vournas

Harry C. Vournas passed away peacefully at the Arcadia Methodist Hospital from complications of congestive heart failure, with his family by his side. Harry was born to Constantine and Diamando Vournas in downtown Los Angeles. Shortly after graduating from UCLA, he took and passed the CPA exam and immediately began working for Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and became a commissioned officer within the year. He married Evageline DeMangus on July 8, 1942. He spent 2 1/2 years in the U.S. and 2 1/2 years in the European Theater, eventually ending up at the Battle of The Bulge. He returned from the war and resumed his career in public accounting. After retiring at 62, he started his own practice associated with the law firm Darling, Hall & Rae and continued to work until his 90th year. His life-long enjoyments include golf (he was a member of San Gabriel County Club for 32 years), cooking and traveling to Greece with his wife. Harry is survived by his two sons, George (Stephanie Brotsis) and their son and daughter, Greg and Anastasia; Ted (Karen Choate) and their daughters Renee and Kimberly. He is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren, one niece and 3 nephews. A memorial service will be held July 5, 2011 at 7:30pm and the funeral service will be July 6, 2011 at 10:30am, both at Saint Sophia Cathedral, 1324 S. Normandie Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90006. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, kindly make contributions in Harry's honor to St. Sophia Cathedral Building Fund at the above address.
