Harold Lynn Petrie, 81, born on April 26, 1942, in Denver, CO, passed away May 26, 2023, at his home in Sierra Madre, CA. A lifelong hiking and fly-fishing enthusiast Hal explored the Rockies, the Sierras, and the San Gabriel mountains. He also enjoyed bicycling, skiing, and motorcycling and was an accomplished archer, javelin thrower, and photographer. An Engineering graduate of the California Institute of Technology, Hal became internationally known for his design of hydraulic jet pumps for the oil well industry. When the California operations were shuttered Hal sought work in the field of Astronomy, his first love, and became Chief Engineer for Palomar Observatory at Caltech. His twenty years there included many innovative successes in improving the performance of the 3 telescopes, particularly the 200-inch Hale telescope first commissioned in 1948.
Hal is survived by his wife Coralie; brother Warren; sons Tars, Conan and Charles and their wives Anne, Irena and Linneth; granddaughters Maya and Charli; grandsons Cade, Alec, Dalton, and Romario, his wife Madalyn, and great-grandson Zephy.
