Gary Dean Hemingway
August 1, 1953 – September 22, 2025
The most kind, gentle soul left this earth in the early morning of September 22, 2025.
Gary Dean Hemingway was born on August 1, 1953, to Patricia and Robert Hemingway at the Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, Ca. As a young boy, he was very active in Monrovia Youth Baseball League. The Army and Navy Academy became home to Gary during his 8th through 12th Grades. He excelled in Baseball, Basketball and Water Polo and was All CIF in all three sports.
He attended Citrus College in Azusa and met the love of his life, Laurie Ann Pfost. They met in a Square-Dancing class and were an “item” from that point on. They married on December 5, 1976, at Immaculate Conception Church in Monrovia, Ca. Their marriage produced four beautiful children, Wade, Maureen and surprise twins, Anna and Donald.
Gary went back to his childhood by coaching his children and his nephews in MYBL and was a wonderful role model for all in promoting positive sportsmanship in baseball. He coached for 12 years.
Gary worked for Ralph’s Grocery for over 40 years, starting out as an oiler, working his way up to Chief Engineer. His organizational skills were impeccable, any surprise inspections by OSHA were never an issue, everything was always in order. During the days since Gary’s death, many of his coworkers have reached out to comment on what a wonderful person he was to work with. They have also commented on how organized he was and made things easy for many due to his attention to detail.
Gary’s mother-in-law, Maureen, was special to him. Prior to her death, he was her “Honey do” handy man, fixing whatever she needed.
As his children grew up and married, Maureen to Keith and Donald to Kari, his love for his children expanded. The apple of his eyes were his two granddaughters, Emma Rose and Rylee Kate. He was the ultimate “Poohpah.” He also considers Kayla and Lauren Reed and Emily and Elizabeth Golding as his granddaughters. He became the unofficial scorekeeper for the girls’ softball games and then soccer, basketball, and volleyball games. He never missed a game if he could help it.
Gary’s smile was his trademark; he impacted so many lives. He was loved by so many.
Gary is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Laurie, his children, Maureen Martin (Keith), Anna Hemingway, Donald Heminway (Kari) and his two beautiful granddaughters, Emma Rose and Rylee Kate Hemingway. He is also survived by his parents, Bob and Pat Hemingway, his sister, Doreen, numerous nieces and nephews and his sister in laws, Marsha Midgett, Nancy (Curt) Sherman, and Tandy Pfost. He was preceded in death by his brother Jerry, his son, Wade, his niece, Jamie, his in-laws, Earl and Maureen Pfost and his brothers-in-law Paul Midgett and David Pfost.
He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, please pay it forward with an act of kindness in honor of Gary.
