Everett Caldwell Moore

March 22, 1945 — February 3, 2025

Everett Caldwell Moore was born in Harlan Kentucky on March 22, 1945, to Helen Marshall and Hufford Caldwell Moore. A few months prior to Everett’s birth, his father passed away, leaving his loving mother, grandmother, two uncles, and an aunt to raise him. As an only child, Everett was surrounded by his loving family as they moved with him from Harlan to Pasadena California in the 1950’s. Growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s, Everett loved the adventures of the TV and movie cowboys and the tales and songs of the old west. The grand western stories of patriotism, courage, hard work, duty to others, and love of family were foundational to the development of his brave and loving heart.

As a Junior at John Muir High School in Pasadena, he met and fell in love with a friendly and outgoing girl from La Canada, California, Helen Grace Howard, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She always saw the good in others and she certainly saw it in Everett. They continued to date, and he graduated from John Muir High School in 1965. He learned about and embraced The Gospel of Jesus Christ, being baptized into the church that same year.

Shortly after graduation, Everett entered the United States Marine Corps, serving one tour in Viet Nam. It was a trying time for Everett. Like other young soldiers, his courage and grit were tried and tested, losing close friends during the conflict. Everett and Helen wrote consistently during his tour of duty and were married when his tour was complete. Thirteen months later, Everett and Helen welcomed the first two of their eventual six children.

Although Everett was offered the opportunity to remain with the Marine Corp and attend Officers Candidates School, he chose to find employment locally so he could be closer to his wife and twin boys. Everett always chose family first. Fueled by his love of the old West and of his local community, he joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department where he served as a Deputy sheriff for 26 years, the last sixteen of which he served as a Detective. Everett developed a unique way of dealing with the challenges of law enforcement, becoming known for both his toughness and kindness. In 1976, Everett and Helen were sealed to each other and their family through the Lord’s holy priesthood in the Los Angeles Temple.

Upon retiring from the sheriff’s department, he became a special Deputy US Marshal for a further 16 years. While serving in the US marshals service, Everett became close friends with a number of Ninth Circuit judges who came to rely upon his fairness, courage, and innate wisdom. Upon retirement from the Marshalls Service, Everett and Helen spent the rest of their lives together visiting, loving, and having fun with their six children and their growing number of grandchildren.

Although his innate physical vigor waned as the years passed, he never lost his optimism, his love for having fun, or his southern accent. He loved going to the desert, camping, and shooting, and was an excellent marksman. Above all, Everett loved the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a first-hand witness to the blessings that come from being a disciple of The Savior. Everett was always quick to love and quick to forgive. He served with his whole heart in various callings within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, showing his discipleship by loving others where they stood, without judgment.

Everett passed from mortality on February 3, 2025, and was preceded by his wonderful wife Helen who passed in 2018. He missed her dearly. Everett and Helen are now together again in the Lord’s presence, and we know they couldn’t be happier. Everett is survived by his three sons and three daughters, his sixteen grandchildren, and his six great-grandchildren.

We love you, Dad. Because of your and mom’s sacred Temple covenants and lifelong discipleship to The Savior, we know our family will last through the eternities. Thank you for that transcendent gift. “God be with you till’ we meet again.”
