Dorothea Marie Leonard

Longtime Monrovia resident Dorothea "Dodie" Leonard, 83, passed away March 31, 2016. She was a member of PEO and Hospital Guild and was also a former member of Dance Club and the Monrovia Tennis Club. After graduating from Pasadena City College and College of the Pacific, Dodie began her career as a kindergarten teacher at Gidley school in El Monte. Taking time off to raise four sons with husband Joe, Dodie returned to the profession as a substitute teacher at Immaculate Conception when a sudden serious illness befell one of the faculty. She taught for many years in Duarte, both at Royal Oaks Elementary and Northview Junior High. After retiring, she traveled extensively with Joe until his sudden passing in 2003. She was to know more sorrow when sons Kenneth and Eric also died unexpectedly in 2004 and 2009. Helping her get through the grief was a close circle of friends known as the Sunshine Club. Dodie is survived by sons Kris and David, daughters-in-law Carol, Susan, and Kathie, and grandchildren Reed, Audrey, Elizabeth, Joe, Scott, David, Kristina, and Amy. A memorial Service will be held at Douglass & Zook Mortuary, 600 E. Foothill, Monrovia, on Saturday, April 9th, at 1:00pm.
