Donald L. Stewart

Donald L. Stewart passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011. Don was born April 21, 1929 in Monrovia and was a lifetime resident on Myrtle Avenue. Don attended Mayflower School, Ivy Avenue School, and graduated from Monrovia-Arcadia (MAD) High School in 1947. Don joined the Naval Reserves in 1947 and was active in 1951 to serve on the USS Hale. He was honorably discharged in 1952. Don was employed by Block's Clothier for many years, then served as a travel agent for Connor Tours. He followed that with his own company, Quality Travel, until being injured in 1995. Following his recuperation, he worked part time for Stewart Travel until his illness. Don became an Eagle Scout in 1947, was a member of the Order of DeMolay, was an active member of the Rotary and a lifetime member of the Elks Club. He was also active in Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Monrovia Day Association, the Monrovia Alumni Association and was a Deacon for the First Presbyterian Church. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Herman Stewart, and his very special long time friend, Gladys Lashbrook. He is survived by "the girls", Glady's daughters Pat Buchanan and Judi Balek, 5 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom called him Grandpa Don. He is also survived by his many special friends who will miss him sorely. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 4:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Foothill and Myrtle in Monrovia. Don will be cremated and his ashes spread at sea according to his wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Don's name to the Tin Can Sailors Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or the Monrovia Alumni Scholarship Fund.
