Bernadette Alford was born on May 20, 1967, and grew up in Monrovia, California, alongside her five siblings. From a young age, she was known for her lively personality, kind spirit, and the deep love she had for her family and those around her.
In 1989, at the age of 22, Bernadette welcomed her first son, Eric Brooks Jr. Two years later, in 1991, she was blessed with her second son, Brandon Brooks. Her sons were a great source of pride and joy in her life.
Bernadette spent most of her adult years in Pomona, California, living on Las Vegas Street. She became a well-known and cherished member of the neighborhood, often bringing life and laughter to community gatherings and local events. Bernadette had a generous heart and was always ready to help anyone in need. Her warmth and compassion touched the lives of many.
Her siblings often recalled that Bernadette was the prettiest baby they had ever seen. She carried that charm with her as she grew up, which earned her the affectionate nickname “Berna Brat,” given to her by her grandfather. Family members would often say that when Bern wanted something, she usually got it—especially when she flashed her famous eyelashes.
Bernadette was truly a daddy’s girl and had a deep love for people. She found joy in helping others, particularly her friends and family. Whenever she gave something to someone, it was always from the heart.
She had a strong sense of style and a love for beauty, especially makeup and perfume. Bernadette was known for always looking her best and was said to have one of the best makeup looks in the Monrovia–Duarte area.
Bernadette began working at the young age of 15, starting her first job at Santa Teresita Hospital in the Dietary Department. Even then, she enjoyed being able to help and serve others.
Music was another passion of hers. She admired legendary artists such as Whitney Houston and Tina Turner. Bernadette also had a love for Mexican culture and especially enjoyed the music of Selena, who was one of her favorite artists. She loved collecting a variety of perfumes and took pride in always smelling wonderful. Above all else, Bernadette deeply loved her family and would do anything for the people she cared about.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her father, George Alford; her sister, Denise Francine Alford; and her children’s grandparents, Bill and Lois Brooks.
She will be deeply missed by her mother, Molly Alford; her sons, Eric Brooks (Alex) and Brandon Brooks; her grandchildren, Trey Brooks, Aiden Arias, and Reign Jett-Brooks; and her siblings, Anthony “Bud” Taylor, Gregory Alford, Roshell Alford, and Renee Alford. She is also survived by a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her love, laughter, and generous heart.
